Towradgi fatal: Illawarra teen fronts court after Towradgi fatal

The Illawarra teenager charged with six offences relating to a devastating crash in Towradgi earlier this month, leading to the death of a 12-year-old boy, has appeared in court.
The 17-year-old was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, failing to stop and render assistance after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, causing injury by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle and unlicensed driver.
He fronted Port Kembla Children’s Court via videolink on Tuesday, a week on from the incident, where his lawyer Rodney Boyd didn’t apply for bail.
A police statement said the crash took place about 1.35am on October 4 when a Holden Barina, allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, collided into a traffic light at the intersection of Memorial Dr and Towradgi Rd, Towradgi.
Officers at nearby Corrimal police station heard the crash and rushed to the scene, however, the vehicle was empty after the occupants fled.
A crime scene was established and was examined by specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit. About 90 minutes after the crash, emergency services were called to an address on Tucker Ave, Baglownie, following reports a 12-year-old boy was suffering from severe injuries.
Paramedics treated the boy and conveyed him to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A crime scene was also established at the home and an investigation by the Crash Investigation Unit was launched which established links between the crash and the boy’s death.
Following a public appeal, the 17-year-old boy was arrested at Goulburn police station about 6pm on Friday.
The matter adjourned until November 29 to allow for brief orders to be served. nvestigations into the crash continue and police are calling for anyone with information or dashcam relevant to the crash investigation to contact Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
