Heartland failure: Why Australian rugby feels like it’s on its knees

1. Tahs and Reds slip into unacceptable territory

If it feels that Australian rugby is on its knees at times, that’s probably because of the condition of the professional sides in NSW and Queensland.

The two states that provide the bulk of the game’s players are struggling. In fact, if the Waratahs miss out on the finals this year – a likelihood given their loss to the Jaguares on Saturday

That isn’t anywhere close to acceptable and while the Brumbies keep on keeping on and Dave Wessels clearly has a good program in Melbourne, the issues for the game are in Sydney and Brisbane.

– NSW and and Queensland will have a single finals appearance between them to show for the past four years.
