New war memorial to troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan to be unveiled by the Queen

The Queen will tomorrow unveil a memorial to the 682 Fallen heroes killed fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Her Majesty will lead tributes to the war dead at the official opening at Victoria Embankment Gardens in Westminster.

It comes as a Labour MP who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan calls on the UK to learn the lessons of the wars so past mistakes are not repeated.

Ex-Army Major Dan Jarvis, 44, served in both conflicts and led 100 men in Helmand as part of the Special Forces Support Group.

A total of 456 UK troops died on Operation Herrick, the military’s codename for operations in Afghanistan, while 179 died in the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, and 47 in the first Gulf War from 1990-91.
