Man charged after two men are punched in the head on a Sydney street

A man has been charged after two men were allegedly punched in the head in Sydney CBD early this morning.

Police have charged a 41-year-old man with assault over the alleged attacks on a 39-year-old man and a 51-year-old in front of a fast food outlet corner of Pitt Street and Park Street at about 12:30am today.

Sydney City Police Inspector Rob Winkler said the 41-year-old man punched the 39-year-old man causing him to fall to the ground.

“The 57-year-old man has come to the 39-year-old man’s aid and was also punched to the ground,” Inspector Winkler said

“The older man was not injured in any way during this assault.

“But the 39-year-old man was taken to St Vincent’s hospital with a minor head injury.

“It is believed at this point that an altercation took place prior to this assault at a fast food restaurant, which lead to the 41-year-old man leaving.”

He said that after the alleged assaults the 41-year-old ran off, but was found by police a short time later and arrested.

Inspector Winkler said alcohol may have been a factor, but no one was seriously affected by alcohol.

He said the police were asking anyone who knew anything about the incident to come forward.

‘That sort of behaviour is completely disgraceful’

Inspector Winkler used the incident to remind Sydneysiders that police would not tolerate violence on city streets.

“We would also encourage members of the community to continue coming to the city to enjoy the many venues we have on offer,” Inspector Winkler said.

“However when they do so, please do so in a way that ensures they will go home safely at the end of the evening.

“That sort of behaviour is completely disgraceful and will not be tolerated at all.

“Any sort of violence on the streets is not tolerated, it’s very disappointing this kind of behaviour is still occurring.

“Police will continue to investigate these matters and put anyone that we catch doing these offences before the courts.”

The 41-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault.

He was granted conditional bail and will face court next month.
