Kingdom considering request for hosting Yemen negotiations

His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday received Yemeni Foreign Minister Khalid Yamani, who delivered a letter to His Majesty from Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, a Royal Court statement said.

During the meeting, held at Al Husseiniya Palace, the King affirmed Jordan’s support to Yemen and its efforts to achieve security and stability.

He conveyed his greetings to President Hadi and wished
him good health.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, Adviser to the King and Director of His Majesty’s Office Manar Dabbas and the Yemeni ambassador to Jordan.

Meanwhile, Jordan on Thursday received a request from UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths to host a “specific meeting” between Yemen’s warring parties, Safadi told the press in remarks following discussions with his Yemeni counterpart.

“We will study the request in consistence with our clear stance on the issue of Yemen, which is to support all efforts leading to a resolution to the conflict in accordance with international legitimacy references and resulting in the relief of Yemenis’ suffering, and we will deliver our response to the request as soon as possible,” Safadi said, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Griffiths told the Security Council on Wednesday that a new meeting was to be held in Jordan next week to follow up on a major prisoner swap agreed by the warring parties last month, AFP news agency reported on Thursday.

During the discussions, Safadi affirmed Jordan’s support for Yemen and efforts to resolve the crisis on the basis of UN Resolution 2216, the results of the Gulf Initiative and those of the National Dialogue, stressing the necessity of upholding the ceasefire agreement reached during UN-brokered peace talks in Sweden last month, as it represents “a significant step that, if implemented, can move the peace process forward towards a resolution to the crisis”.

He added that Jordan supports the legitimate government in Yemen and the coalition to restore its legitimacy in coordination with Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Yemeni people, to the end of alleviating the suffering and ending the humanitarian crisis, according to the statement.
