ISIS stages mass abduction

300 cement workers and contractors in an area north-east of Damascus have been abducted by Islamic State militants as reported by Syrian state television.

The mass abduction supposedly took place on Thursday in Dumeir, an area where militants launched a surprise attack against government forces earlier this week.

A source in the company was quoted saying efforts to establish contact with the workers has been unsuccessful thus far.

Contact with dozens of workers in Dumeir had been lost earlier in the day said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident yet and no further details of the abduction were immediately known. The country’s civil war has brought many instances where large-scale abductions have taken place, most often of religious minorities such as Christians.

The abduction occurred while fights broke out with ISIS militants in northern Syria on Thursday.
