On 6 March 2018, the Australian Embassy in Beirut celebrated International Women’s Day at Nawfal Palace in Tripoli. More than 120 Australian-Lebanese women from all walks of life attended the event. Also present were Kazem Kheir MP, former MP Misbah Ahdab, and representatives of municipalities and political leaders.
HE Australian Ambassador Glenn Miles highlighted Australia’s leading position on gender equality, being the first country to grant women the right to vote and sit in parliament in 1902. “All women deserve the right to live free from violence, to control their bodies, go to school, participate fully in political processes and earn equal pay for equal work, free from harassment”, Mr Miles said.
Deputy Head of Mission, Gemma Huggins, emphasized the contributions women make to the workplace, to the home, and to society, while guest speaker, Laudy Lahdo, General Manager of Servcorp Middle East, told her journey as a successful Australian-Lebanese woman in business.
Women were also engaged in the MyWish4Women activity, as they made their wishes for equal pay, gender equality, and equal opportunities.
