World Rugby probe extra New Zealand player at Sydney Sevens

World Rugby is investigating whether New Zealand’s dramatic last-gasp pool draw with Australia at the Sydney Sevens came with eight Kiwi players on the field.

The sport’s governing body says the 17-17 result will stand, but they are reviewing the incident to “determine if any disciplinary action is warranted”.

Australia led 17-10 in the dying moments of Saturday night’s match when vision from television cameras showed eight New Zealanders on the field at the Sydney Football Stadium before Ardie Savea scored under the posts.

New Zealand took top spot on pool A on for-and-against and reached the semi-finals with a 24-7 win over USA in Sunday’s Cup quarter-final round.

Australia beat England 17-10 on the back of a Henry Hutchison double in their quarter-final.
