Saudi Arabia continues to support Lebanon

Saudi Arabia Ambassador Ali Awad Asisri claims that Saudi Arabia continues to support Lebanon despite the diplomatic difficulties that threaten their continued cooperation.

Asiri states that “Saudi Arabia has nothing but good [intentions] towards Lebanon” in response to Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal.

Ambassador Asiri advises Lebanese businessmen to turn their investments towards Riyadh. He claims that the kingdom “will always keep its doors open for them,” to The Daily Star.

Asiri’s remarks come during a Gulf Cooperation Council crackdown on supposed Hezbollah members and advocates occupying their countries.

He claimed to The Daily Star “The reason behind the latest political rift with Lebanon is clear…It doesn’t suit the historical relationship between the two countries.”

It was in March 2015 that tensions between Riyadh and Hezbollah worsened over the war in Yemen as both groups found themselves supporting opposing sides.

Tensions eventually evolved to the point where Saudi Arabia led groups, The Arab League and the six-nation GCC recently declared Hezbollah a “terrorist organisation”.

Asiri describes his belief that Lebanon’s political developments are too sporadic for anyone to predict, however despite the conflicts and local crises he remains optimistic regarding Lebanon’s future.
