US destroyer docks at Beirut Port

A U.S. destroyer docked at the Beirut Port early Saturday, being the first U.S. warship to do so in more than 30 years.

The USS Ramage is a guided-missile destroyer, according to the U.S. Navy and is an Arleigh-Burke ship.

Sources familiar with the move say this has been in the works for some time.

LBCI quoted the U.S. Ambassador in Lebanon, Elizabeth Richard, as saying that the ship’s presence is a “political message,” and that the U.S. relationship with Lebanon is not limited to military aid.  “We are committed to helping the Lebanese people during this difficult economic period,” Richard said.
